The Future is Now

That's just the noise fistbumps make, guys.

I am new to this whole "video conferencing" thing; it's all crazy and futuristic to me. I can't tell you how giddy I was for this entire conversation. Though you can probably tell I was silly. Rachel, on the other hand, is contractually obligated to be the straight man. Woman. You know what I mean.

Of course, this new technology comes with new problems, a few of which are illustrated in the extra comic you get when you vote on TopWebComics!

EDIT: Since I apparently never thought to mention it, we were using Tokbox. So far it has worked great, but I can't give a really confident recommendation until we've used it a few more times. :3

I am pretty sure that for my entirety of my life I have been and shall always be, the straight man. It's just how it goes. Which is part of why I'm always so giddy to make a joke. xD Even if it's a terrible pun.

A favourite quote on this comes from my friend Spike, about life at SCAD: "You know, back home, I actually used to be the comic relief; here among you freaks, I'm the straight man!"

I, on the other hand, tend to flip-flop. ^^;

I have Skype for video conferencing, primarily with relatives, but I've yet to use it on a regular basis. I'm not sure though if it's multi-conference.

What video chat site were you able to find for that?

Ah yes, the KIDDIE games. ;0P

Naw, if you want to do 3 or more people on Skype, you have to pay.

And, yep! We used Tokbox, and it worked out pretty well! We'll see if it continues to work out after we've tried it some more. :3

I wouldn't mind being able to do video-conferencing, but I haven't been able to find a web-cam at a decent price that's Mac compatible. (All the ones I've seen for under $100 are for Windows. :-( ) Maybe the iPad will come with one...

Aw, sad, does your Mac not come with one? D: I know a lot of the newer ones come with webcams already, which is probably why most webcams are for PC, but I'm not sure what model you have.

My laptop (the one that I use on the internet the most) is a Powerbook G4. My Desktop is a G4 Sawtooth. Both run OS 10.4.11. There is third-party software that will supposedly let PC web-cams run on Mac, but what I've tried doesn't work. Like I said, maybe the iPad will come with one.

Sigh. I never thought I'd be plugging a MS product, but here goes. The Darling Husband has a MS webcam that works with his eMac as well as The Boy's iBook G4 (OS 10.4.11). I'm told that all they do is plug the USB in and it works with iChat. After doing some searching, here's the URL of the one he has: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/digitalcommunication/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=016. (~$80; don't know how that compares to what you've looked at)

Good luck!

I would also be interested in what it was you were using, since I am of course too lazy to google it myself.

Also: followed you from GiTP and been lurking since you started, great comic Shazz!

Aw, thank you so much! I'm glad you've been enjoying it; thanks for sticking around! :"D

D'oh, I should probably add a link into the P.S. Box. The thing we were using is at Tokbox.com -- you sign up, and then it pretty much works through AIM/some other chat clients I don't use. It's fairly easy and you don't have to download anything! So far, it's worked great; we'll see if that continues after we've used it more. :3

Heh, I remember when I first got skype my friend and I would have some very amusing video chats. And I think you can do audio chats (no video) with skype for three or more people. Otherwise I have no idea what my friend did to make it like that once. o_O

Yeah, Skype allows Conference Calling (3+ people) for free. Conference video is a pay-only feature, though. It sucks.
